Life lately...

-We went on vacation, hence my absence. It was glorious. Our destination? Maui. Logan loved the ocean, wanted to eat the sand, splashed her feet in the water, squealed in delight as she “swam” in the pool, loved Kahlua pork, and did super awesome. She also tolerated driving around the island and hiking while strapped in the Ergo (with 90 degree weather and humidity).

Here she is in one of her swimsuits and her swim cap (better than a hat because she didn’t try to take it off!). Both are from Gap:

-I am in major party planning mode. Got Logan’s first birthday invites yesterday and I’m just STUNNED that I’m at this point. How can it be?????? Where did my baby go? I’m trying to make the event as relaxed as possible for me because I want to enjoy my girl’s party.

-Logan is WALKING. You guys, I can’t handle it. She took her first steps over the weekend, but still preferred crawling. Yesterday though, she was all about walking. Her small, tentative steps are so surreal to me. Once again, HOW CAN IT BE? WHERE IS MY BABY?

-I am producing less milk. Like, really minimal. I think my breastfeeding days are coming to an end. On one hand, I’m a little lost as to how I feel about this. This is truly the one thing that’s mine and Logan’s alone, but at the same time, it’s almost silly to think that breastfeeding defines our relationship. I will say that now she nurses mostly for comfort. We’ve supplemented with more formula and she is eating lots of food too. Oh, and not pumping as much at work is so liberating. I was pumping 4x a day, and I’ve now reduced that to 2x. I can actually really work now!

-Summer is officially here and with it (and thanks to less breastfeeding), my beloved white wine! Ha. My birthday is in August and I’m planning wine-tasting in Napa, or even the local wineries in my area. I can’t wait!

-Remember that whole thing about getting a Kindle? I did end up purchasing one and it has been the BEST ever. It truly feels good to be reading again. I’m on my 8th book right now and I have a  bunch that are just waiting to be read and waiting to be available from the library. Which, by the way, has proven to be the best way for me to get a hold of books because they are FREE.

And that’s about it! It’s been nice to be unplugged but I’m glad to be back as well :)

“We used to think that breast milk was just a food and that it was filled with fats and proteins and vitamins and that formula companies were successfully able to mimic this. But we now know that there are substances in breast milk that exist almost at the same levels that are not digestible by infants. So what are they doing there? It turns out, they’re digestible by beneficial bacteria. So over millions of years, the mother has been creating a substance that will recruit useful bacteria into her infant’s gut and this sets her infant up for life. So as much as breast milk is a food, we also now understand that it’s also a medicine.” —

This entire article is fascinating.

Life is good: just yesterday → saraplainandtall.tumblr.com

o-baby:

you were
two little lines of confirmation
butterfly flutters
and then teeny tiny kicks
a closet of clothes washed and waiting
a silent nursery.

just yesterday
you were
placed on my chest
wrapped in a swaddle
sleeping in my arms
joining our family
starting to gurgle, learning to…
